From Algorithmic Capital to Algorithmic Management (A Theory of Algorithmic Management Emergence)

Abstract:

This study explains how algorithmic management emerges within organizations by developing the Algorithmic Management Emergence Theory (AMET) and conceptualizing algorithmic capability as a multidimensional mediator linking algorithmic capital to managerial practice under specific governance conditions. Methodologically, the study adopts a conceptual, framework-based theory-building approach and synthesizes literature grounded in the resource-based view, intellectual capital theory, the SECI model, and scholarship on algorithmic management and governance. The analysis draws primarily on peer-reviewed studies published between 2019 and 2026, supplemented by seminal theoretical contributions. The findings suggest that algorithmic management should be understood not merely as a technological system adopted by organizations, but as an emergent organizational capability enacted through computational artifacts. The study identifies algorithmic capability as the key mechanism through which algorithmic capital is transformed into managerial practice and introduces the Algorithmic Capital-to-Management Framework (ACMF) to explain the micro-level formation of this capability. At the macro level, AMET specifies causal and moderating relationships among algorithmic capital, algorithmic capability, governance conditions, and algorithmic management through five theoretical propositions. The study contributes by shifting attention from the operation and consequences of algorithmic management toward its organizational antecedents and emergence mechanisms. Future research should empirically validate the proposed constructs and relationships and examine their implications for governance, organizational performance, competitive advantage, and ethical outcomes.
